There’s a positive indication of future job growth in Windsor in the Conference Board of Canada’s help-wanted index.

The monthly index monitors the number of help-wanted ads in 70 online publications.  Although the index doesn’t use industry specific data, it’s considered a good predictor of job growth in 26 cities across Canada.  Windsor is one of 14 cities that show an increase in help-wanted ads.

Conference Board of Canada economist Alan Arcand says there also appears to be a relationship between the index’s findings and the unemployment rate, which Statistics Canada is expected to release this Friday.  The jobless rate for November was 10.8%, up .3% in October but down from 15.9% in June 2009.

Arcand credits construction on the Windsor-Essex Parkway for Windsor’s improved prospects as thousands of construction workers are expected to be employed on the project for at last two years.  But it’s not just construction workers who will benefit.  “(It’s) also going to lead to several thousand spinoff jobs in the city and I think that’s why you’re seeing an uptick in the help-wanted index.”
